Performing At Gilman

My Experience

After exploring the scenery and attending quite a few concerts I have met many people who go to Gilman for many different reasons. After talking to a few of my friends about it and bringing a few of them to concerts, I have heard some suggestions to attempt to perform there. Initially, I laughed it off, not thinking much of it. I'm a classical pianist, and even If I wanted to seek to play at the venue, would the host even allow a classical pianist to perform at their venue. I figured that since there were many "out of place" performances that happened throughout time I could shoot my shot

Contacting The Host

I ended up tracking down the host's email from digging around a bit on the web and shot a quick email expressing my interest in performing at the venue with no idea what It would entail, a few days later, I got an email back saying how they would love for me to perform, I expressed that I was okay with being a side performer maybe during intermissions I don't know if I would be bold enough to be performing classical piano on a big stage but I figured that ill just leave it as a mystery until I got there on performance day.

Preparing for Performance

As we narrowed down on a day for me to come, I wasn't more and more trying to scramble what I should play and how much I shuold prepare, I ended up just trying to learn alot of the songs that I have previously played in the last two years. As for making a different style, I knew that I was pretty good at making things up at the spot so I was just going to feel out the vibe of the room the day of the performance and act accordingly

Performance Day

There I was, It was a Sunday evening and I came over a bit early, It looked like there was already a band setting up and I just went to the front desk to get my situation sorted, I would be playing during the intermissions between performance as background music which is perfect and just what I wanted. I got some time to myself to warm up and meet the performers and people who were working there. When the concert started I got to enjoy the performers, during intermission, I got to just play my songs in the background, It was very nice,  like playing at a cafe with a piano in the back corner, but with more chaotic energy.

All in all a magnificent opportunity and I am very thankful for all of those who helped me put this experience together. This serves as a reminder to all to always push your boundaries of what is possible and try new things!
